ASID Design Award for a Residential Kitchen
Austin Design wins a design award for this residential kitchen project.
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) believes that design impacts lives. Founded in 1975, ASID is the oldest, largest and only multi-disciplinary professional organization for interior designers, interior design students and the manufacturers and suppliers who support the profession.
Each year, the ASID National Awards represent the Society’s highest level of professional recognition. The awards recognize a body of work created over the course of a career rather than a specific member achievement. However, institutions, companies, and patrons may be recognized for specific exemplary projects or product innovation.
This year Austin Design by Catherine Canfield was voted an Award for one of her Residential Kitchen projects.
The challenge with the original kitchen was that the cabinets were knotty alder, the countertops were a builder grade granite and the backsplash was a 4” tumbled travertine. The walls were also painted a dark gold and there was a peninsula which separated the kitchen from the nook. The overall look was very dark and dated.
What I recommended, was to replace the cabinets with a lighter color along the perimeter, remove the peninsula and add a large island in a contrasting color, to unify the spaces. I also designed the ceiling to incorporate beams and skylights, strategically placed to be evenly spaced throughout the kitchen and nook. I also suggested replacing one of the windows with French doors, to allow in more light and to allow the clients to have an open flow between the kitchen/nook area and the outdoor covered patio.
